On
Myself
I started my career in computers in 1985 around the
time the first IBM compatible PCs were first introduced
in India. Clock speeds were in the vicinity of 4.77
MHz and floppy disks looked like mortarboards.
I taught myself BASIC and then became a (professionally)
trained COBOL programmer.
I worked as a part-time COBOL programmer with a software
company in Bombay for a short while. At 16, I was
a rare sight in any office, but programmers were rare.
After an abortive attempt to sanctify my career in
computers with a degree in Computer Engineering (Pune
University), I joined advertising as a copywriter.
Advertising was exciting in the early nineties for
a young copywriter and I have rubbed shoulders with
the best creative talent in India. But Bombay was
too limiting. I took the opportunity to live and work
in Calcutta (or whatever they call it these days),
New Delhi, Madras (Chennai) and Bangalore.
I have worked with the best of India’s IT talent
in Bangalore, Chennai and Coimbatore. Some of the
lectures and workshops that I conducted here placed
me in the middle of some of the most talented and
curious minds that I’ve had the pleasure of
meeting.
The world economy is shedding its Industrial Revolution
cladding and moving towards an economy based on knowledge
and information. If India is to spearhead this revolution,
I believe I have found the tip of that spear."
